The libido: A guide to understanding what makes us tick!

What is libido?

Libido is a term typically used to describe your sex drive, which is why it’s a crucial component when it comes to understanding what makes you tick!
Your libido is affected by a whole host of biological, psychological social and environmental factors. Whether your libido is sky high, or you’re stuck in a rut and your libido is low, you should work towards understanding your sexual desires if you want to really ignite your sex life.

What does it mean to have a high or low libido?

Low libido means that you have a decreased sexual interest or desire to have sex. On the other hand, high libido is quite the opposite – describing someone with a strong sexual desire or drive.

Of course, everyone’s ‘normal’ is different. Some people have sex once a day, once a week, once a month, or less frequently. However, if your libido changes suddenly, or is lower than you would like, you might want to look at ways to increase it.

What causes a loss of libido?

If you’re struggling with your libido and have lost the desire to masturbate or have sex with your partner, it could be down to a whole host of underlying issues. And the good news is that many of these can be resolved with the right support or medication.

Common underlying causes for a loss of libido include:

  • Everyday stress – This is why so many people see their libido skyrocket when they are on holiday!
  • Medication – Medications such as anti-depressants, anxiolytics and blood pressure medications can reduce libido and greatly affect your sex life.
  • Fatigue – disrupted sleep patterns won’t do you any favors in the bedroom. In fact, research shows that women who get 8 hours sleep or more a night have a higher libido. So, make sure you knock out those ZZZs ladies.
  • Relationship conflict – Stress and tension in a relationship have also been widely linked to a low libido.
  • Hormones – Finally, hormones such as estrogen, testosterone progesterone and cortisol can also impact the hormone receptors in the brain that trigger sexual desire.

    Role Play

Embracing your fantasies and giving your all in role-play is a great way to boost your sex life, whether you enjoy dominance play, role-playing or orgasm control. Try not to overthink it!

    Sex toys

Sex toys are great fun and there are lots of toys out there that are ideal for enjoying with your partner and boosting your libido. Choose one together and, whether you add it to foreplay or intercourse, you’re sure to notice a difference in your libido.

    Phone/video chat sex

Not all couples have the luxury of being together all the time but that doesn’t mean your sex life or libido needs to suffer!

Thanks to advances in technology, there are now more ways than ever before that you can spice things up without being in the same room. In fact, phone sex was ranked as one of the highest turn-ons of 2021.
