Menopause marks a significant transition in a woman's life, but it does not have to mean the end of your sex life. Many women find that their intimacy can be just as satisfying, if not more so, during and after menopause. It does mean there may be some changes to adjust to.

Understanding menopausal changes

During menopause (defined as when you have not had a period for 12 months) and the preceding years of perimenopause, your body’s estrogen levels drop significantly. This hormonal shift can affect sexual function, which can lead to decreased desire and difficulties with arousal. It can also make the vaginal canal less stretchy, and you may experience vaginal dryness, leading to pain during sex. More than a third of women in menopause report sexual difficulties, from lack of interest in sex to trouble having an orgasm (1).

Here, we explore ways to help you embrace your sexuality and put the enjoyment back into sex and intimacy during menopause.

Overcoming vaginal dryness

At least 17% of women will experience vaginal or vulvar dryness, and the numbers rise to as many as 90% for postmenopausal women (2). This means many menopausal women struggle with sex and intimacy, as well as navigating day-to-day life with pain and discomfort. The good news is there are very effective ways to treat vaginal dryness naturally. Still, your first point of contact should always be your doctor or gynecologist.

Using a vaginal moisturizer daily and good lubrication during sex can provide natural relief from these symptoms. You can find out more about our pH-matched Natural Vaginal Moisturizer here. You can also learn more in our dedicated Vaginal Dryness Guide.

Experiment with lubricants and toys

When it comes to lubrication, wetter really is better. Using a lubricant can help reduce friction and enhance sensation. All AH! YES® lubricants are plant-based, certified organic, pH-matched to the vagina, and designed to be side-effect free. Whether you are experiencing dryness or irritation, or just want to enjoy the luxurious feeling of AH! YES® products, discover our range of lubricants here.

Did you know you can also use two lubricants at the same time? Both our water-based and oil-based lubricants can be used together to create the a double glide effect.

You can also try incorporating sex toys, such as vibrators or massagers, into your sex life. Whether during masturbation or with a partner, finding a toy that works for you can add excitement and variety to your sexual experiences.

Prioritize self-exploration

It is important to take time to reconnect with your body and explore what feels pleasurable to you. What feels good can change over time. The best way to do this is to experiment with different types of touch and explore your erogenous zones and different masturbation techniques to discover what brings you pleasure and arousal. Remember, your body is unique, so what works for someone else may not necessarily work for you.

Communicate with your partner

Open and honest communication with your partner is not only crucial for supporting a satisfying sex life during menopause but also for setting realistic expectations about what you can do sexually and how you experience intimacy as you age. Discussing desires, concerns, and any changes you may be experiencing can foster understanding and empathy between partners. By communicating openly, you can explore new ways to make each other feel good and deepen your connection. Remember, everyone’s experience of both menopause and pleasure is different, so it is important to focus on what works best for you.

Focus on sensuality

Instead of focusing only on orgasm as the end goal, embrace the journey of sensuality and intimacy. Engage in activities that heighten your senses, such as sensual massages, erotic literature, or intimate conversations. By prioritizing sensuality, you can enhance arousal and enjoyment, whether or not orgasm occurs.

Top tip: Our oil-based lubricant AH! YES® OB also doubles as a massage oil, making it great for taking your sensual massage to the next level.

Seeking support

Do not hesitate to seek support from healthcare professionals or sex therapists if you are experiencing challenges with sexual function or satisfaction during menopause. They can provide guidance, resources, and personalized strategies to help you overcome obstacles and enjoy a satisfying sex life.

Menopause may bring changes to your body and sex life, but it does not have to diminish your pleasure and enjoyment. By prioritizing self-exploration, open communication, and experimentation, you can unlock new levels of sexual satisfaction and intimacy during and after menopause.
